People are often surprised to learn I moved from newsrooms to nursing stations. But the more I've sat with both, the more they rhyme.

A good interview and a good patient check-in both start the same way: you stop talking, and you actually listen. You notice what's said, and what's carefully avoided.

Journalism taught me to ask the second question, not just the first. Nursing taught me to ask it gently.
