A small newsroom means everyone does everything — you report, you edit, sometimes you're the one laying out the page at midnight before print.

There's a particular kind of accountability that comes with covering a small island community: you will see the people you write about at the grocery store the next morning. That closeness sharpened, rather than softened, how carefully I chose my words.

Some of the biggest stories I ever covered ran in papers most of the world will never read. That never made them small.
