The liberation of Guam

With the successful invasion of Saipan in 1944, the plan had been set to take Guam. Admiral Chester Nimitz chronicled the events leading to the island’s takeover in his diary—the Gray Book. Guam had long been an American territory since 1898, and its invasion in July 1944 is more aptly called a “liberation” from the Japanese forces in contrast with Saipan, which had been under Japanese administration since October 1914.
